North American International Auto Show 2013
Detroit, Michigan, USA
January 14th – 27th, 2013
Once again thousands of spectators and media converge to the COBO Center in Detroit, Michigan for the annual North American International Auto Show. This year unlike those of the past, some big unveiling took place including the new Dodge Viper SRT, Chevrolet Corvette ‘Stingray’, Acura NSX concept, and many more. Here’s our take on the highlights from the show, we hope you enjoy it.
Nissan displayed a special edition GT-R with olympic sprinter Usain Bolt… in case anyone had trouble associating speed with the GT-R. Nissan produced the one-off “Bolt GT-R” to be auctioned off to benefit the Usain Bolt Foundation.
Mercedes-Benz unveiled the new E class, including the E63 AMG 4Matic. 550 hp, 531 lb-ft. of torque are sent through a 7-speed gearbox and distributed to all four wheels; 33 % up front and 67 % to the rear under normal conditions. In sport mode the drivetrain now implements torque vectoring to reduce understeer.
Acura unveiled yet another NSX concept vehicle (yes, this is #3 for those of you who are still counting). This version is a few steps closer to production, showing an interior and a few details about the drivetrain. The next NSX will feature Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system with 2 electric motors powering the front wheels and another integrated into the direct injection v6 engine.
Ford displayed a concept hinting at the next generation f-150 featuring styling cues similar to the 2002 Tonka Concept and the 2006 Super Chief. This version features practical details like an updated step up bar and active aerodynamic aids in the grill, chin spoiler, and wheels.
The long anticipated C7 Corvette took the stage Sunday night at Detroit’s Russell Industrial Center. The new Vette marks the return of the Stingray designation. A 6.2L V8 now uses direct injection, continuously variable valve timing, and active fuel management to produce 450 hp, 450 ft lb torque and 26mpg. The new design continues the distinctive Corvette profile, but with styling cues similar to the Dodge Viper SRT and Nissan GT-R.
Aston Martin couldn’t make it to the Detroit Auto show this year, so Hyundai paid tribute to the absent auto maker with a distinctly Aston concept… just kidding! This is a concept version of the new Hyundai Vanquish, i mean Genesis. Hyundai shows off an updated version of it’s “Fluid Sculpture” in the HCD-14. Hyundai looks to continue to challenge up market brands with competitive specs, luxury features, and closer to premium vehicle styling. The ‘premium sport four-door coupe’ is clearly aiming at vehicles like the BMW 6-series GranCoupe, Mercedes-Benz CLS, and Audi A7. The concept features a few high tech ideas including Hyundai’s take on a heads up display and a eye tracking and gesture recognition program.
